Pitch Multiplier Reference Table

The pitch multiplier converts horizontal run to sloped rafter length. For a gable roof, multiply half the total width by this factor to get the rafter length.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about gable roof calculations

What is a gable roof?

A gable roof is the most common residential roof type, consisting of two sloping sides that meet at a central ridge. The triangular wall sections at each end are called gable ends. Gable roofs are popular because they are simple to build, shed water and snow effectively, and provide excellent attic ventilation.

How does gable roof cost compare to hip roof cost?

Gable roofs are typically 10–20% cheaper than hip roofs of the same size. They require simpler framing (no hip rafters or jack rafters), less ridge capping material, and generate less waste because all cuts are straight rather than angled. Material waste is usually only 10% compared to 15–20% for hip roofs.

How does gable end ventilation work?

Gable ends provide an ideal location for ventilation openings. Gable vents are installed in the triangular wall area near the ridge, allowing hot air to escape from the attic naturally through convection. This passive ventilation reduces cooling costs and prevents moisture build-up that can damage roof framing and insulation.

How is the ridge length calculated for a gable roof?

The ridge length of a gable roof equals the building length plus any gable overhang on each end. For example, a 10m building with 0.3m gable overhang on each side has a ridge length of 10.6m. The ridge runs along the top where the two sloping sides meet.

What is the purpose of a gable overhang?

A gable overhang (also called a rake overhang) extends the roof past the gable end walls. It protects the walls from rain and sun exposure, prevents water from running down the gable end, and adds architectural detail. Typical gable overhangs range from 150mm to 600mm depending on the design.
